Hi, welcome to my website.  Bethel Junior High School is filled wonderful staff and students.  We strive to create a welcoming, friendly learning environment with rigorous academics. Bethel Junior High has begun implementing a program called Making Middle Grades work in an effort to continue to improve our school. If you would like more information on this program look under links.
I am the School Counselor for students whose last names begin L-Z. If your last name begins with the letters A - K, Mr. Yost is your School Counselor. We are generally available from 7:00 to 2:30. Due to our busy schedule, it is highly recommended you call ahead for an appointment to ensure you will be seen. I am often in classrooms, meetings or out on assigned duties. You can contact the Counseling Secretary/Registrar Mrs. Hagen at 683-7284 for an appointment. You may fax information to our building fax number at 683-7298. I may also be contacted through email at sgates@bethelsd.org.
I am here to help and support students through their Junior High School years. We strive for students to have an enriched, engaging experience at Bethel Junior High. We have all kinds of activities, clubs and sports for students to be involved in at Bethel Junior High.

Counselors implement Our Schools advisory program which occurs every Friday Morning. Copies of the advisory lessons may be found under documents.
I am also the National Junior Honor Society Advisory. Applications for NJHS can be found under documents.

Student 2 Student program

Bethel Junior High runs a  program called student to student to help new students transition into Bethel Junior High. This program is supported by the military child education coalition. I am the advisor.  A team of student was selected and trained in transition issues. Student to student goal is to provide support to students who are relocating to Bethel Junior High. Student to student mentors will assist new student s in learning the academic requirements, building healthy relationships with peers, school staff, local groups, and finding their way around the campus, community and learning the rules. To learn more information visit www.MilitaryChild.org or you can contact Ms Gates in the counseling center.

At Bethel Junior High, we have several itinerants and support staff who come regularly to help serve students with specials needs.  Some of these staff members have specific days when they are at Bethel Junior High. Others have a flexible schedule and come on an as needed basis. The following is a list of support staff available at Bethel Junior High: School Psychologist, School Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Pathologist, Career Counselor, Physical Therapist, Student Assistance Counselor, and Native American Educator. You can contact the school for more information on schedules and services.
I have listed some great links on under the links tab from testing, school issues, college planning to area social services. I have also included some informative articles on teenage issues found in school counselor and parenting magazines. There are also just some fun writings to read and think about under the document section of this web page. I have some fun photos and school related cartoons in the image gallery you may enjoy viewing. These are all intended for educational purposes.

Some key tips I have for academic achievement for struggling students are following:
    1.
Family Access: If you are a student or parent of a student at Bethel Junior High, I highly recommend to get signed up with family access to follow students grades and attendance.  You may sign up for family access in the ASB office with Mrs. Wilson. Students should have already been given their login and passwords through their advisory teacher.
    2. Using a planner: I also recommend daily use of a planner for students and a supervised homework area to be designated for use in the evening.
    3. Keep in weekly contact with teachers and check teachers websites regularly:
Email teachers if you have questions or concerned regarding your students academic progress. Be sure to check out your teachers web pages for information on their classes and assignments.
    4. Be involved with school activities: Join the PTA, go to school events, become a volunteer at school. Show your children you take and interest, support school and that school is important.
    5. Check your child's binder, notebook and back pack regularly for unfinished work, missing assignments  and  see  that they stay organized.
    6. Check out school homework helper on the web. I have listed homework helping websites on the links page, that can help students with their work.
    7. If you have tried the above suggestions and things still are not improving you can contact You son or daughters school Counselor to set up a staffing with teachers before or after school.
