Please refer to the 'Events' section for daily assignments and homework.

Our daily work schedule will be as follows:

We will also begin "Read Naturally" very soon which students would be working on independently.  This will happen a few times a week.  I have not decided when we will be doing this because I am still waiting for the program to arrive.

As you should know, students are required to read at least 800 pages a semester.  Their communication arts teachers are monitoring this by assigning reading logs for students to document their reading on.  Any reading we do in class can count as outside reading on their reading log.  Students are also encouraged to bring the book that they are reading for communication arts to class daily.  I keep explaining to them that they should be reading any chance they get not only to fulfill their requirements but also to become an active reader.

Homework - all classes:
Students are required to read a minimum of 800 pages a semester, therefore, we will have reading homework every night.  Students will be required to read at least 20 minutes a night and fill out their reading log.  The homework coincides with Reading Counts.
(Please see below)  The students will be reading their Reading Counts books and filling out a reading log that I will provide for them once we start.  The reading logs have a front side and a back side.  Each side will be for a different week so, therefore, the reading logs will be due every other Monday.  I also do this so that the students have the opportunity to make up any day that they might have missed during the week.  They can make it up on any day during the week or the weekend.  As we all know, Life Happens!  Students will not be excused from their required reading for any reason, however, because they are given time to make it up throughout the week.  Reading logs are worth 40 points, and are worth 10% of their grade.

Due dates for all reading logs:

Reading Counts:
Reading Counts is a reading program we use here at Cedarcrest offered by Scholastic.  Reading Counts, similar to Accelerated Reader or STAR reading, is a program where students read books at their reading level and then take a quiz on the book.  My reading classes will be visiting the library soon and anytime, thereafter, to check out our Reading Counts books.  Books that are Reading Counts books or have quizzes to be taken, will be labeled.  Students can check out any book that they desire to read, but must make sure that they have a book to read that they can take a quiz on to get class credit.  The students do not have to check out books here at the Cedarcrest library, but books from home or from the public library will not be labeled Reading Counts books, unfortunately and not all books have quizzes for Reading Counts.  Students will be encouraged to check out books that are of their interest and at their reading level.

When the student finishes reading their Reading Counts books, they need to take their quiz.  These quizzes are all on computer.  There are 8 computers in my classroom which have access to 'Reading Counts' and, I believe, 3 in the library that students can use to take their quizzes.  I am requiring all of my classes to participate in 'Reading Counts' this semester.

Each quiz consists of 10 questions.  In order for the students to receive class credit for their quiz and move on to the next book, they must receive a passing score of 7 points or more.  If the student receives a score of 6 or less, they must retake the quiz again and can not receive credit for it until they have passed.  If the student takes a quiz 3 times and fails all 3 times, they will be locked out of that book indefinitely.  This will tell the student and I that either they didn't read the book completely or that they will need to choose an easier one.

Due dates for 'Reading Counts' books to be done and quizzes to be taken:
