Dear Parent or Guardian,
2009-2010
Welcome to classroom 1 at Camas Prairie Elementary! I am
excited to be your child's teacher. My number one goal is that your
child master 1st grade skills in reading, writing, and math. My
overall goal is that your child has a successful year while
becoming more independent and responsible.
Communication
A weekly two-sided classroom newsletter comes home every Friday
(with the weekly homework packet). It is called the FRIDAY
LETTER. It contains important classroom news. The backside of
the newsletter, which tells what will be covered in each subject
area during the week, will also be available online at:
http://classrooms.bethelsd.org/cp/ccruz/index.php?section=announcements
Ways you can communicate with me include: notes in the
daily/homework folder, written notes, or brief phone calls (before
9:30 a.m. or after 3:35 p.m.) Please schedule an
in-person or telephone appointment with me if you would like more
than a brief chat. My phone number is 253-683-7400. You
can also email me ccruz@bethelsd.org. I will only be able to
check my email before and after school. During the day your
children need all my attention.
Classroom Agreement (rules)
1. I listen and look at others when they speak to me.
2. I do what I’m supposed to do without reminders.
3. I take turns.
4. I use manners.
5. I ask questions to help myself learn.
Classroom Consequences
To help myself, students, and parents to monitor daily behavior, I
use an “I’m a Star” folder that comes and goes
from school daily. It is color coded and integrates into my
math program. Here is how it works…
Students in room 1 start the day on green. All students who stay on
green receive a green super-star stamp inside their folder at the
end of the day and a sticker.
1. A Verbal Warning (no change in color; stays green)
2. Repeated misbehavior after a previous warning. (student receives
a yellow stamp instead of a green stamp. A will not be
included) This is not the level to start taking desert and TV away
level. This is just the “Do better tomorrow.
Listen/follow directions the first time.” level.
3. Repeated misbehavior after previous warnings. Student has in
classroom time-out or goes to another teacher's classroom to
complete work. (student receives an orange stamp-a note will be
attached) This (and following levels) are the levels to take more
serious action with at home.
4. Significantly affecting the learning environment of peers.
Student completes work in another teacher’s classroom,
there’s phone call home, and the student misses all of
recess. (student receives a red stamp-a note will be attached)
5. Interrupting the learning environment of peers and /or
taking a significant portion of teaching time from the classroom
teacher. Student talks with the principal or assistant principal.
(student receives a black stamp and an office referral form will be
attached).
“Feel out” September for what colors your child is
bringing home and then decide what your expectation is for your
child and set a goal together. For example, offer to do
something special if your child collects 15 super-star yellow
stamps or if your child collects 30 superstar cards. Your support
and follow-through in this area will help all of us have a great
year! PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD KEEP THIS FOLDER IN HIS OR HER
BACKPACK AT ALL TIMES.
Classroom Rewards
As behavior merits, students will:
• earn cotton balls for teamwork.
• earn small prizes from a prize-box for
self-control. Prizes should be kept in the student’s
backpack until they arrive home.
• earn pride slips for positive behavior
that enters them in a drawing for pizza with the principal.
• earn classroom awards and privileges for
academic excellence and positive actions. These are called
Happy Face Awards.
• earn school-wide awards each trimester
based on academic excellence, attendance, and modeling core
character traits.
• earn wildcat tokens for accomplishments
outside the classroom. (ie: lunchroom/hallway/recess.)
Homework
First graders will receive a homework packet every Friday beginning
September 7th in their homework folder. It is always due the
following Thursday. This schedule, which includes the
weekend, allows parents and students time on the weekend to
complete homework if work schedules make nightly homework
difficult.
This homework packet and folder should remain in your child’s
backpack when not in use at school and at home. I restock
folders on Thursday nights. Therefore, your child will not
have a folder in his or her backpack on Thursday nights.
PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD KEEP THE FOLDER AND HOMEWORK IN HIS OR HER
BACKPACK SO THAT NEITHER GETS MISPLACED.
I look forward to a tremendous year with your child and family!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Crystal Cruz
