Another school year.........
Announcement!!
Elk Plain Science Fair and Family Night date has been set!!
Mark January 29,2009 on the calendar. Science fair projects are
"required" for all 4th,5th, and 6th grade students. The projects
will be on display that evening in the gym along with other
presenters and activities throughout the school. If you have a
special talent (science related) and would like a table, please
contact Mr. Elliff at school. In addition, we will be needing
volunteers for that night also........!
First trimester has begun........
6th grade is studying Simple machines (FOSS kit called "Levers and
Pulleys")
We have had a number of investigations and the kids are beginning
to understand the "real world" applications.
** By the end of October, there will a student research
project. The students will be given a presentation sheet with a list
of suggested topics. They will research and give a short (2 minute)
presentation to the class. They have done these in the
past ; it's just a final project for the unit, related to simple
machines. I suggest that they include "visuals" to aid in
understanding.
5th grade is studying a FOSS kit called "Landforms". They
have been using stream tables to investigate how water changes the
surface of the earth. Besides being "messy', it has
been informative ........the students can see first hand how
floods cause erosion and deposition.
Like the 6th graders, the 5th graders will be doing a similar
project/ presentation related to "Landforms"......look for the
assignment to be coming soon.
The 2nd and 3rd graders are studying a unit titled "Pebbles, sand
and silt"...........some of the topics in this unit are sorting and
properties of rocks and minerals.
The unit for the kindergarteners is "Wood and paper". They will be
learning types of wood and products that are made from trees.
