Course Overview...
These classes will enable students to refine their writing, reading, and communications skills in accompany with the district's EMC assigned literature and 'Step Up To Writing' curriculum.  Students will learn how to write multi-paragraph essays of varied types (narratives, compare-contrast, expository) and lengths for their grade level.  In addition, they will be able to identify topic sentences, transitions, examples/evidence, and concluding sentences consistently throughout the year.  Also, students will learn the differences between 'Fiction', 'Non-fiction', and 'Dramas/Plays'.  Students will work individually, in pairs, and groups with in-class activities.  Finally, each student will create and update their portfolio throughout the school year.

  • Effort includes the amount of quality time they put into achieving the standards of the course.

  • Attendance reflects a sense of responsibility as a student to be at school regularly.
  • Participation allows students to take an active role in their own learning.
  • Compliance involves doing what is expected to the best of their ability while at school. This includes being on time, prepared for class, and meeting classroom expectations and standards.
  • Being prepared to engage in thinking, listening, reading, and speaking in class.

Units of Study (Learning Targets)...
  1. The student understands and uses different skills and strategies to read.
  2. The student understands the meaning of what is read.
  3. The student reads different materials for a variety of purposes.
  4. The student sets goals and evaluates progress to improve reading.
  5. The student understands and uses a writing process.
  6. The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.
  7. The student writes clearly and effectively.
  8. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.
  9. The student uses listening and observation skills and strategies to gain understanding.
  10. The student uses communication skills and strategies to interact/work effectively with others.
  11. The student uses communication skills and strategies to effectively present ideas and one's self in a variety of situations.
  12. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of communication.

Grading Policy...
  • All work will be organized into each student's folder.  Work will be self-assessed by student with supervision by staff.
  • Late work is accepted throughout each grading quarter with full credit allowed as long as the student can demonstrate mastery of concept/learning target.
  • The main focus in these classes is aimed at the individual's needs and abilities, and being able to demonstrate growth and meeting State Standards.
  • Student-Involved Weekly Progress Reports are tied to FJH's Advisory time in which students participate in assessing their own performance, ability, and goals/targets in their learning through self-reflection, rubrics, and/or feedback.
