EUROPEAN LANGUAGE SURVEY It is so important for our young people to increase their knowledge of, understanding of, and respect for cultural differences. Our media is alive with the problems created in the world when we don’t understand and respect each other. This semester course will focus on reading, writing, and speaking basic vocabulary and phrases of German, French, Italian, and Spanish. Students will also learn basic European geography and cultural highlights. Assume about six weeks of study for each country. Every effort will be made to acquire this knowledge through active participation and use of all the senses. In addition to standard textbook work, there will be games, videos, and activities to encourage participation, practice, comprehension and celebration of the language and culture. The following will be expected of each student: Be able to identify the countries of Europe on a map and major geographical features Students will create physical and political maps of Europe, Germany, France, and Spain. Be able to read, and speak basic vocabulary and phrases in target languages Students will create dictionaries in each language of 30-60 words Be able to identify a number of cultural icons of each country/Europe in general Be able to identify and give examples of differences and similarities of the target languages.
We will select from the
following for each unit: *Courtesies and Salutations (introductions, please, thank you etc.) *Numbers (1-50), Time *Geography (location, main cities and waterways) *Months, days, seasons (When’s your birthday) *Colors *Classroom objects (Where is, there is) *Places (Where is) *Food (I would like to have, how much is) *Parts of body
Every day we will practice situational use of the phrases we are learning with each other through little conversations, games and activities. This is not a class with a heavy written workload, so participation is very important. Each student will be issued a workbook from which there will be assigned 1-2 written assignments per week. There will always be some class time allowed. From time to time students will receive a handout (a map for example). It is expected that students will keep them neat and clean in a binder until due. Extra handouts ARE NOT available due to budgetary concerns. Lost materials may be replaced by going to my Swift page and printing out at student expense.
Students will be asked to do a brief cultural presentation for each language (details to follow). Other activities which will contribute to the grade will be quizzes (objective), skits demonstrating ability to use the vocabulary appropriately, a “dictionary” created from information learned, and a culminating essay outlining similarities of the languages to each other and to English. (Based upon ongoing notes taken in class).
Classwork turned in on time, neat, complete, and accurate will receive an A or B Late work will receive a C or D depending on its condition. Incomplete work is unacceptable. Quizzes may be retaken within two weeks of the original and must be arranged at least a few days ahead of time with the teacher. (Since the language and workbook changes every six weeks, it’s unwise to wait too long).
I am available after school at Frontier by pre-arrangement. Otherwise I can be reached at Graham-Kapowsin.
