Welcome to Mrs. Joy Johnson's Webpage

I began college while raising my two children.  I completed my degree with a major in Special Education and a Minor in Social Science in 1991 from Pacific Lutheran University.  It was a real challenge being an older student, and a single parent, but I felt wonderfully alive and proud achieving my goal.  In 1996 I returned to school to complete my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

On a personal note, I am the mother of two wonderful daughters.  They have kept my life full and busy.  Anne is the reading specialist at Cedar Crest Junior High, and my youngest daughter Christie is in the Human Resource field as a recruiter.  I am very proud of my children, but I am desperately hoping for grandchildren.  I live in the Puyallup area and love this part of the Puget Sound.  I grew up in Spokane Washington so I experience new things each and every day living here.  I remarried about 10 years ago to a wonderful man, Darryl Johnson, who takes very good care of me.  Hobbies for me include reading, walking, camping and fishing.  I love traveling and exploring new places.

I have been teaching at Pioneer Valley for 18 years.  I was one of the original members. I feel right at home teaching third graders and look forward to every day.  They are at that age where they are open to learning and it is still a fun experience.  They also have a wonderful sense of humor, which I really enjoy.  The most rewarding part of being an educator is seeing the eyes light up when the children have learned something new. That "Aha!" moment.

My favorite read-alouds are The Napping House by Audrey Woods (she is a wonderful illustrator as well) and There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly.  When I get a chance to read to myself at home, I like the Harry Potter series and anything in the Science Fiction genre.  My passion is reading!  I read each and every day.  My other favorite series is by David Eddings called The Malloreon.  I also enjoy any book by Anne McCaffrey.

My goal as a teacher is to build on students' sense of self as well as the student's previous educational experiences.  I enjoy working hard every day to be a better teacher for tomorrow.  I am my hardest critic.  In my class it is always my goal to have a safe, caring, loving environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed.  There will be no tolerance for any discrimination of any kind.  I have an open door policy.  If at any time you have an opportunity to come to my class to join in on the activities you are more than welcome.
