Course Description
This is a Communication Arts class for 7th, 8th,
and, 9th graders with specialized instruction for students with
Individualized Educational Programs (IEP’s).
In the communication arts class, we will be using
the writing process to write in a variety of styles, especially
focusing on persuasive and expository writing; learning and
applying the rules of spelling and grammar; exploring different
genres and elements of literature; and improving reading
comprehension and vocabulary. Our textbook is
Literature and the Language Arts,
published by EMC Paradigm Publishing. Required readings from
this text are, “The Diary of Anne Frank” and
“Black Elk Speaks.” We will also read the memoir
“The Red Scarf Girl” by Ji-li Jiang.

Late work/redo policy
Students are expected to meet deadlines and do quality
work. However, on selected assignments students
will be asked to redo the work until it meets
standards. For these assignments, students will
be given a two week window in which to either complete the work or
redo it. Exceptions according to IEP may be
negotiated by teacher so long as student is actively engaged. The
student will receive support including after-school help, lunch
café, after-school Success Academy and Saturday School Success
Academy.
Classroom Rules and Expectations
All SJH building rules will be followed in the
classroom.
