Course Description:  This is a reading class for 7th, 8th, and 9th graders with specialized instruction for students with Individualized Educational Programs (IEP’s). We will be working hard to improve reading levels using the SRA Corrective Reading Curriculum.  This is a lab class, and all work must be done during class.  Therefore, good attendance is imperative.   In order for students to improve their reading skills it is highly suggested that they fit in 20 min. of reading at home each day.  You can do this in a variety of ways such as having your child read aloud to you, reading silently, and reading together.

Course Goals and Objectives

EALR 1:  The student understands and uses different skills and strategies to read.
1.1       The student will use word recognition skills and strategies to read and comprehend                      text.
1.2       The student will use vocabulary (word meaning) strategies to comprehend text.
1.3       The student will build vocabulary through wide reading.
1.4       The student will apply word recognition strategies to read fluently.

EALR 2: The student understands the meaning of what is read. 
2.1       The student will demonstrate evidence of reading comprehension.
2.2       The student will understand and apply knowledge of text components to                                           comprehend text.
2.3        The student will expand comprehension by analyzing, interpreting, and                                          synthesizing information and ideas in literacy and informational and literary                          text.
2.4        The student will think critically and analyze author’s use of language, style,                                  purpose and perspective in informational literary text.

EALR 3: The student reads different materials for a variety of purposes.
3.1         The student will read to learn new information.
3.2         The student will read to perform a task.
3.3         The student will read for career application.
3.4         The student will read for literary/narrative experience in a variety of genres.

EALR 4: The student sets goals and evaluates progress to improve reading. 
4.1         The student will assess reading strengths and need for improvement.
4.2         The student will develop interests and share reading experiences.

4.    Do your assignments.
5.    Show respect for yourself and others.

Grading Scale:

100%    - 95%  = A                    79.4% - 76.5% = C+
 94.9% - 89.5% = A–                    76.4 % - 73.5% = C
 89.4% – 86.5% = B+                    73.4% - 69.5% = C-
 86.4% - 83.5% = B                    69.4% - 66.5% = D+
 83.4% - 79.5% = B-                    66.4% - 59.5% = D
                             Below 59.5 % = F
